| WGHS junior, Ryan McGinnis, achieved a first-place finish in the 2021 Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair. Ryan's chemistry project allowed him to make an edible tape for use in the food industry. Congratulations to Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Ledman, who he credits with helping him achieve this first-place result. He will now compete against students worldwide in the International Science and Engineering Fair. |

Important Information
Welcome Back! - I hope all of you had a restful break. This week already ushers in April and the beginning of our assessment season. With just over nine weeks left of the school year, a lot of work still needs to be done to prepare our students to succeed with final exams and end-of-course exams. I know how important this work is to you, and I appreciate all you do to ensure our students' success. Thank you! Let's make this a great end of the year!
ELA Kudos - Congratulations to our 10th grade ELA team for making great strides in student achievement. Before the end of the first semester, Mrs. Klampe, Mrs. O'Janpa, Ms. Csontos, AND Ms. Thrasher gave the state ELA benchmark test. The team, including Tori Wein, reviewed the data, planned interventions, and adjusted their instructional strategies to achieve better results. Another benchmark test was given before spring break, and student scores rose tremendously. It can easily be said students achieved better than expected on this latest round of assessments. Congratulations to the 10th-grade team on your results!
House Bill 67 - Over break, HB 67 was signed into law by Governor DeWine. The law grants students opportunities to graduate who might not be able to otherwise due to state testing requirements. Another item to note from HB 67 is the American History exam no longer needs to be offered; however, we will still give the exam. Successfully passing the exam may qualify students to receive the Graduation Citizenship Seal with their high school diploma and may eventually qualify for individual student graduation requirements.
Chromebook Security Measure - A new Chromebook security measure was implemented over break to help keep students from accessing a peer's account. When a Chromebook is closed, the device will require the student to login after it is re-opened. Please inform the students of this new measure. Thanks.
Academic Decathlon - Congratulations to Ben Speros and the entire Academic Decathlon team on their 3rd place finish in the state competition. West G finished behind nationally-ranked Oakwood and Willoughby South. Of the team's ten members, eight medaled in at least one event. Be sure to congratulate senior Elizabeth Piekarski, who was the third-highest scoring varsity category competitor in the state. She won seven medals out of 10 possible areas. Also, Sofya Goncharenko had the highest overall score for the team. Year after year, our team earns accolades with Ben Speros leading the group! Great job, Ben, and thank you for advising this great group of students.
